![]() Chai Society Excursion to the Museum Of Jewish Heritage, October 2007
Given what we do and what we can do in the future, please consider joining with us. If you want to join with other Jewish men and also contribute to TBS, then the Brotherhood/Men's Club is for you! Sisterhood Click here or scroll down for Sisterhood Calendar -- Click here for Judaica Shop Temple Beth Sholom Sisterhood is an active community of women that fosters educational, social, and spiritual growth for the temple as well as the reform Jewish community. Over the years, members have formed friendships, and offered each other support, while uniting for laughter, learning, and leadership. Every year, the Sisterhood offers adult education programs in the form of classes and lectures. Speakers such as interior decorators, doctors, and realtors have informed the congregation about topics of interest. We started this year with a lavish catered brunch for our members, learned how to cook like a gourmet chef, hosted a hilarious Comedy Night, knit squares to form a blanket that was donated to charity, participated in a walk to raise breast cancer awareness, taught Mah Jongg and jewelry design, arranged for delicious Shabbat dinners and provided refreshments for those who donated blood. We initiated a popular new program called Brown Bag University that meets with the Rabbi to discuss portions of the Torah. We joined with Brotherhood to sponsor the art auction that raised funds for our nursery school and Table to Table. At the end of the year we celebrate with our annual Sisterhood dinner. Our fundraisers and events have been both rewarding and fun. Every year, we sell candy for Passover and make chocolate candies for Hanukkah. Sisterhood also works to support breast cancer research by selling handmade chocolate roses. Sisterhood runs the temple Judaica shop, helping our congregants with all of their ritual, special gift, and Bar and Bat Mitzvah needs including yarmulke baskets that fit your theme or occasion are created by our own Leah Moldovan. Sisterhood has made many contributions to enhance the ambiance and functioning of our Temple. We are very proud to have donated all of the funds necessary for the reupholstering of the pews and bima benches in our sanctuary. In the past, we have provided the wheelchair lift for the lobby and renovated the religious school. We also decorate the bima for Succot and Simchas Torah. Finally, the opportunities to perform mitzvot in Sisterhood are numerous. We support our temple youth group, provide scholarships for children to go to camp through your generous donations to the Sisterhood Campership Fund, and give gifts to every Bar and Bat Mitzvah child. We also donate to the YES fund, and other temple initiatives. There is a place in Sisterhood for every woman in the congregation no matter how active your schedule. We appreciate any time, help or suggestions that you can give us. Temple Beth Sholom's Sisterhood is a friendly welcoming group and we look forward to having you join us. The Chai Society Goes to the Internet BSTYG BSTYG Chadashot - June 2008 Our Youth Group year has flown by and we are already planning our 2008 - 2009/5768 - 5769 calendar of events. When I took this job (it can't be a job - it's too much fun!) I had no youth group experience and didn't know what to expect. These teens - and the 8th graders that I know will be 'officially' joining us - are a wonderful group of fine, caring young adults. I thank you - Temple Beth Sholom - for this opportunity and for your trust. By the time you read this we would have finished up our final activities for the year. Going back a bit into April - even though the events were mentioned in the May Lamp - the chocolate Seder was a lot of fun and then sitting outside for havdallah and wishing each other a "shavuah tov" under the stars was beautiful. And then the next day - our teen mitzvah day was well attended and fun to be part of; perhaps more importantly, we raised $442 for Table to Table. I also walked away with notes written by the children for the Kotel (Western Wall) and letters for Israeli soldiers that our son Ben will bring with him when he leaves for Israel in August. In May a number of the teens attended Spring Kallah; I hope next year the number of participants will be larger. On May 16th we had our official final event - a Shabbat dinner followed by a Youth service. New board members were announced (at this writing I don't know who they will be) and new members - the 8th graders soon to be 9th graders - were welcomed. And then, of course, we took part in the Salute to Israel Parade on June 1st. Even though these Lamp articles speak of our events and plans, the piece that's missing is what goes on behind the scenes. The emails, the phone calls, the board meetings, the planning, the satisfaction (and once in a while the disappointments) - an incredible amount of time and energy is invested by the board in each event & activity. With all my heart I thank Andrea Seidenberg, Josh Paz, Jen & Randi Bassik, Maxi Silverman and David Bailen. And thank you to all the BSTYG members who attended the events and made them fun & successful. Looking forward to next year - we will build upon what we have learned, we will reach out to increase our membership (this year we had 19), we will provide a wide variety of opportunities to deepen our commitment to Judaism and Israel, to perform tzedakah & mitzvot and to have fun. I'm looking forward to experiencing Youth Group next year with as many of you as possible, Please join us. Have a safe and wonderful summer. Goal - & now striving to do even more…. As you shop for your own families' food, we are asking you to purchase an extra can or two of non-perishable food which can be dropped off each week at the temple. Or, you can visit the TBS website (www.templebethsholom.info) where you can pledge for needed food. Then, send a check to TBS and we will purchase and deliver the food on your behalf. This mitzvot is a means of tikkun olam, helping to perfect the world. Together we can help our neighbors. Drop boxes are located at: Temple Beth Sholom (main office and religious school office) Please keep the drive alive. Come join us to feed the less fortunate.
